The dentist’s role in the early detection of skin cancer

Identification of the first signs and symptoms of skin changes requiring action, treatment pathways and how outcomes are altered by early detection with Mr Sanjay Sharma.

Followed by a hands-on suturing master class with Mr James Sloane.

Mr Sanjay Sharma, Consultant Maxillofacial/Head and Neck Surgeon

Sanjay trained at King’s College London and at St Bartholomew’s Hospital to achieve his dual qualification.  He completed his postgraduate training on the South Coast and was awarded his Doctorate in Medicine in 2008 for his work on the genetics of cancer growth. He treats complex conditions such as facial injuries, cysts and tumours, intricate tooth extractions, implants and bone grafts.

Sanjay’s understanding of face and neck anatomy is exemplary.  He was appointed as a consultant at Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust in June 2010, specialising in head and neck cancer and reconstruction.  His special interests include facial plastic and aesthetic surgery using non-surgical and surgical techniques, consolidating these with an attachment at the world-renowned Boston Facial Plastic Surgery and Facial Nerve Center.

Mr James Sloane, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

James is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon working at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust, Basingstoke. He is dual-qualified in both medicine and dentistry. Graduating from Nottingham Medical School in 2003 he undertook his early surgical training in Bristol where he also completed his dental degree.

His specialist Oral and Maxillofacial training in the South East of England included rotations at highly regarded units such as Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead and the Royal Surrey Hospital. After becoming a consultant, James undertook a further international fellowship focused on orthognathic (corrective jaw surgery), reconstruction of traumatic facial injury and dental implant surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia. James also undertakes routine oral and maxillofacial procedures such as wisdom tooth removal and as a member of the specialist skin cancer multidisciplinary team is experienced in treating facial skin lesions.
